Unglazed Teapot

This traditional style teapot is made from a mixture of Toride City from Ibaraki Prefecture and Arakida clay from Saitama Prefecture. Both of these clays are harvested and processed by hand to create a workable material from scratch.

Each teapot is handmade from start to finish, including a ceramic mesh to filter out unwanted tea leaves and the woven Wisteria handle. They are then fired in a wood kiln built by Shimojo himself on the grounds of the Toride campus of the Tokyo University of the Arts, where he works now as a technical assistant.

Teapots are traditionally made from high-iron clays like those used here and are left unglazed to allow contact between the clay body and the tea. This contact is said to enhance the flavour of the tea.
