Yakishime Kyuusu
made by Shimojo Akira
Unglazed Kyuusu - 焼き〆急須
This green tea teapot (Kyuusu) is made from a mixture of Toride City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and Arakida clay from Saitama Prefecture. Both of these clays are harvested and processed by hand to create a workable material from scratch.
These teapots are fired in a wood-fired kiln built by Shimojo himself on the grounds of the Toride campus of the Tokyo University of the Arts, where he works now as a technical assistant.
Kyuusu teapots are traditionally made from high-iron clays such as the ones used here and are left unglazed to allow contact between the clay body and the tea. This contact is said to enhance the flavour of the tea.
