A very large deep plate in Japanese Kurokaki wood. Kurokaki is the Japanese name for black persimmon wood and is quite rare, especially in this size. It is a member of the ebony family and only very old trees have black heartwood in the centre of the tree. The wood is highly prized in Japan and is often used for special items such as tea caddies for the tea ceremony. This piece was given to me by a deceased woodturner who probably cut the tree himself. It has quite strong spalting patterns (the thinner black lines) caused by woodworm that ate away at the tree while it was still alive. (Don't worry - there is no risk of woodworm in the piece now!) Whilst local woodturners would consider this piece less valuable due to the holes and splits, I personally love the natural features and the story it tells of the tree's life.

  • Wood constantly changes and breathes, even after it has been crafted into products. In some cases this may take the form of a bend, twist, crack or other deformation. We believe that wood is a living material and it will take on more character as it ages. However, there are ways to ensure that your product lasts longer. Avoid using these items in areas that are excessively dry, such as near air conditioning or windows exposed to direct sunlight. You should also avoid leaving them in water or in close proximity to a source of heat.
